"The Mountain Zone"

Interactive Sound Design & Music in a Video Game

The final project completed during the MSc Music and Sound for Film and Games course at The University of Hertfordshire. This simple game was custom made in the Unity engine with various Unity Store Assets to create an environment where music and sound design could be implemented through Middleware software Fmod to create a fully interactive experience.

Interactive Soundtrack

To match the low-poly visuals, an upbeat soundtrack was composed in layers and implemented with vertical orchestration, so the amount of each track playing depends on the player's location in the world map. 4 individual tracks were composed and edited for the game.

Sound Design and Ambience

The ambience is played over the entire level with different layers being introduced or removed to match the current area. This creates a cohesive and subtly changing ambient state within the game. 3D sound effects also trigger within Fmod dependent on player distance.

Middleware Implementation

A complex footstep system was implemented within Fmod, where a different type of footstep sound plays according to what surface the player is standing on, with these being randomised so they trigger in any order. This was also implemented into the ambience system in certain elements.

"Robot Shoot-Out"

The final project completed during the BA(Hons) Creative Music Production course at The Academy of Contemporary Music London.

This first person shooter game was made in the Unity engine from a game basis and adapted with custom new levels. The soundtrack created for the game consisted of 4 main tracks and 3 jingles. The 3 tracks for the levels feature additional "danger" layers that are introduced into gameplay when the player is engaged by an enemy.
